Sandra Ribeiro Psychology Center
Psychotherapy for Adolescents
Our Patients Stand By Us
But... Does My Child Need a Psychologist?
At the Sandra Ribeiro Psychology Center, we understand that adolescence is a time of significant change and transformation—physically, psychologically, relationally, emotionally, and intellectually. It is a notoriously turbulent stage, often marked by family conflicts, where the search for identity leads to a break from childhood and the beginning of a new way of relating to parents.
Our center has professionals specialized in psychotherapy for adolescents. This form of therapy provides a safe space for teens to express their emotions, openly talk about how they feel, discuss the situations that trouble them, and be truly heard.
Our adolescent psychotherapy helps them understand their feelings, gain self-awareness, and express their emotions in a healthy, adaptive way. It also supports them in managing relationships, improving how they handle challenges, and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
We work with adolescents to enhance their emotional expression, self-esteem, communication with family, self-concept, social skills, autonomy, and more.

Therapy for Adolescents
This transitional stage between childhood and adulthood brings considerable confusion to adolescents’ lives, as they are often expected to act like adults but are still treated like children. Adolescence is inherently turbulent, as the search for identity leads to a break from childhood and the start of new dynamics with parents.
Therapy for adolescents provides them with a safe space to express their emotions, openly discuss how they feel, talk through the situations that trouble them, and be truly heard.

Frequently Asked Questions
As parents, it can be difficult to accept that our child needs specialized psychological help. To make it easier to identify when something is wrong and it’s time to seek a psychologist, we’ve listed a series of warning signs:
- Feelings of sadness or melancholy most of the time.
- troubles (insomnia or sleeping too much).
- Frequent irritability with sudden bursts of anger.
- Sudden mood swings.
- Avoidance and isolation.
- Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy.
- Involvement in undesirable activities.
- Alcohol and/or drug use.
- Self-harm and/or risky behaviors.
- Issues with school grades, attendance, and/or homework.
- Changes in friends or activities.
- Eating problems: not feeling hungry or eating more than usual, not eating with the family.
Psychotherapy can help them develop social skills. These skills are tools that enable them to navigate their environment better, whether with family, peers, in their relationships, or when resolving conflicts. Additionally, psychotherapy will also help them identify harmful beliefs and replace them with healthier, more constructive ones.
- Anxiety
- Bullying
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
- Issues with academic performance
- Aggression and violent behaviors
- Divorce/separation within the family
- Problems in family, emotional, and/or peer relationships
- Eating disorders
- Addiction to social media and/or certain substances
- Toxic relationships
- Emotional dependence
- Difficulty saying no and setting boundaries
- Problematic use of new technologies
No. In adolescent psychotherapy, it’s important to remember that the patient is not the family, even though they may sometimes be involved. This means that the ethical principles of confidentiality are upheld, and what the adolescent shares during sessions is not communicated to the parents, unless the content poses a risk to the patient or others. This will be discussed with the patient in the first session.
In other words, your psychologist is obligated to maintain professional secrecy. Your parents will always be informed of your progress, and your psychologist will support them with guidelines to improve communication with you, but the details of your therapy are between you and your psychologist.
You don’t have to discuss anything you don’t want to. Your psychologist will always respect your pace, and when you’re ready to talk, she will be there to listen and help you manage whatever you need.
